Site Models
Models of the existing building and the site were created as a part of the research process to evaluate the space available. Due to not being able to enter the building for several reasons the models create showed the floor levels, the space heights and the scale of space available to work within. I decided to create two models of the site, the first a 1 to 50mm scale model of the building which I did as a section removing the wall that is adjoined to the neighbouring building as this would allow me to see the light within the surrounding spaces looking through the existing windows and doors. The second model is a site model of the building and the surround area to look at the building heights, space and how the building sits within the area.
Site Section Model
As an analysis the section model was created removing the existing staircases and creating the basement as a full size space rather than the closed space as it is shown on the existing plans. I took this decision as I knew early on that which the project I wanted to open this space due to its size and how dark the space was to create an entrance and a functional retail and dining space on this level. Creating the model as a section also allowed me to add models to see the size of spaces that were conceptual and make adjustments in this way. This model was created using the brown cardboard as this will represent the existing building in contrast to the new shown in grey.
