Spaces with Spaces
The idea of creating a space within the building that is almost a "secret" space. The cooking aspect of the design would have its own space and separate entrance to the rest of the building. With this idea I began looking at this idea of spaces within spaces and how this aspect could work to connect the separate space to the rest of the building.
Secret House, AGi Architects
The Secret House by AGi Architects was looked at as a design precedent due to the inclusion of a space within the central space in the house. The design moves around this space to create the house using this courtyard space within the middle as a space that can be seen but no accessed. The space is surround by the staircase which provides occasional views into the space and offers views across the building as a whole. Using this technique of a space that can be seen in parts is interesting. It provides views of parts of the space rather than the full area creating the idea of mystery and questioning.
Three Small Spaces in a Loft, Studio Cadena
The three small spaces design example was looked at with the idea of space within space in mind. The three space create an apartment space within one space. The idea of being able to walk around the space and go in and out of different spaces is an unusual concept. The movement between the spaces and how they connect is a key aspect of creating a number of different spaces is how they can work together.
The Silence Room, Alex Cochrane Architects
The Silence Room by Alex Cochran Architects can be found in the middle of Selfridges in London. The space which has a great resemblance to the Deer Shelter by James Turrell. The Silence Room is space where people can go and sit and reflect within the business of the store. The space and its location was one of the reasons for looking at this space was for how its a quite space within a busy and loud area. This is the kind of feel that needs to be created within the cooking school space in comparison to the atmosphere within the rest of the restaurant space in comparison to the aspect of education within the cooking school.
House in Takamatsu, Yasunari Tsukada
I decided to look at the House in Takamatsu due to its use of how the space has been created within the house. The design uses space that flow into each other to create the space. The idea from this design that I felt could work well within aspects of the space within the building is that the spaces do not have ceilings. This use of removing one of the barrier that closes the space of from the rest of the building. This idea would remove the visual understanding of the space but the use of the sense of sound would be still be apparent.
